Pavilion Beach has become a spot widely enjoyed and appreciated by Ipswich residents for nearly a century. Since 1927, when proprietors formally transferred the land to the town of Ipswich, it has become a well-loved location. Hidden along the end of Little Neck Road in Ipswich, Pavilion is a small beach that is easy to miss for people visiting the town. So, what makes Pavilion so well-loved by residents and students of Ipswich High School?
To Ipswich residents, Pavilion functions as more than just a place to swim. Pavilion is often seen as a place to hang out with friends or relax and watch the waves. Senior Raiyne Carlton described their trips to Pavilion: “I sit in the car and listen to music with my sister and some friends… listen to music, play card games, talk, eat fried chicken, and sit in the trunk eating food together with friends.” The beach is more than a place to swim for most residents; it’s a place to connect and enjoy the simple pleasures of life together.
With its long history and no-cost entry, the beach holds a special place in the hearts of many Ipswich residents. However, not every Ipswich resident prefers Pavilion Beach. With the larger beaches available, like Crane Beach, it is harder for such a small beach like Pavilion to compare. Living on Great Neck, senior Lacie Greenwood echoes this sentiment, “I think we are very lucky in this town to have all the beaches we do. I would say I like Plum Island, and the backside of Crane Beach better than the smaller beaches because it’s less crowded and I usually take my boat to other beaches. But we are very lucky to live in a beach town.” However, Lacie appreciates the closeness of the beach. And, with other beaches in the town like Crane, it offers more space for Ipswich residents to enjoy. Pavilion creates a more intimate atmosphere for those who enjoy it over the hustle and bustle of Crane Beach.
Being a resident of Ipswich and a teacher, Mr. Ames has seen how popular a hangout spot Pavilion has become over the years. He reminisces that the beach serves as a space of relaxation for students, “It’s a better place to hang out than downtown…It’s nice to have it; it’s nice you guys have it.” Understanding the stress and pressure students face as a teacher, Mr. Ames has come to appreciate the beach as an escape for students. In particular, Mr. Ames enjoys the stories he hears from students about the fun they had there. “I hear a bunch of stories down there,” he says when asked what he likes the most about Pavilion. Pavilion has become a place where students can create fond memories to look back on, just like past generations have before.
Pavilion has become a cherished part of Ipswich for residents as a place to escape daily life, picnic, swim with family, or just relax. Pavilion has a special place in the hearts of the community. While not as well-known as Crane Beach, the beach stands as a reminder of the history of the town and makes Ipswich a special place to live because of all the unforgettable memories and experiences made there.
