The 2025 Ipswich High School golf team was one to remember, with a record setting season. Although there was room for improvement, the team was able to electrify the school success. From the coaching, to the captains, to the mindset for growth, this team was truly special.
From the very first match, it was clear this year’s team was different. The roster expanded to sixteen players, four more than last year, showing that golf’s popularity at Ipswich is stronger than ever. Out of the sixteen players, eight players were selected to participate on the varsity squad. Right out of the gate, the team started strong, with leadership from the team captains. Captains Connor Wright and Charlie Pezza set the tone early, averaging a solid 22 points from Charlie and 30 points from Connor. Gardner O’Flynn, their coach, stated that he “couldn’t have asked for a better group of seniors”, and that he was “very pleased” with the season. As he puts it, “The captains brought the positive energy needed for our success.” Coach O’Flynn made it very clear that the seniors were to lead the team and would ultimately dictate the success of the team. Along with the staple of seniors was a sophomore that shined throughout the season. Sam Harrington secured the number 2 spot, meaning that he was the second best golfer on the team. He was a large part of the success, with a bright future ahead of him. As the results show, the players certainly did something right, finishing first in the Cal Baker Division for the first time in twenty two years.
Although the players were such a staple to the success of the team, the coaching should not go unnoticed. The former MLB player, Mr. Gardner O’Flynn, has one of the most positive, upbeat yet chill vibes in the school. Coming from an athletic background, he is no stranger to winning. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 199
3 draft from the University of New Hampshire. Today, he takes pride in being the Head coach of the golf team, with this year being his favorite yet. Adored by the players, senior captain Charlie Pezza claims that he is “most definitely the best coach I have had at the High School”, explaining that his high school experience “would simply be incomplete without Gardy”. The respect that the players have for Mr. O’Flynn is commendable and made it a healthy competitive at practices, with little to no pushback throughout the season. Although minor disagreements are common anywhere, the golf team was able to stay unified and focused on their singular common goal.
The skill and leadership of the players, combined with the positive coaching and atmosphere of the team, provided the perfect combination for success. As the Tigers look to bring home their second straight title next year, all of Ipswich is excited for the future of Ipswich Golf.
This record-breaking year didn’t just raise the bar for Ipswich golf; it inspired a new generation of players to pick up their clubs and try out the sport. Although the season recently wrapped up, anticipation around Ipswich golf continues to grow. With underclassmen gaining experience and upperclassmen setting a high standard, the future looks extremely bright for the Tigers.
